Jack Hedlund '65

"I came from a humble background. I wouldn’t have been able to attend college without scholarship support. That’s the point of the scholarship. We want to give something back to the University. Our appreciation extends to wanting to help other students experience what I got to experience. The heart and soul of any university are the students, and we want to help other students attend Alfred University and join the University community."
Jack Hedlund ’65 and his wife, Linda, both grew up in Kane, PA. They were high school sweethearts and married entering his sophomore year at Alfred. Jack was a history and political science major while Linda worked at the local drugstore, Hitchcock Pharmacy. Following graduation, he began a 36-year career in education that includes earning his master’s degree at Alfred, teaching in the Hornell school district, Elk County Christian and Ridgway High Schools and concluding as principal (19 years) and assistant to the superintendent (9 years) in his hometown of Kane.
An undergraduate athlete who lettered in football and track and is a member of Alfred University’s Sports Hall of Fame, Jack also enjoyed a successful career in high school coaching and served with numerous interscholastic athletic associations including the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association and the Rules Committee of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
The Hedlunds are parents of three children including daughters Tammie and Tania and son Tim, who is a “chip,” having graduated from Alfred University in 1989. They are also members of Alfred University’s Founder’s Society, composed of AU alumni who have donated cumulatively at least $100,000 to Alfred University. They have chosen to support undergraduate scholarships, helping students who otherwise would not be able to afford an Alfred University education.
